Aftermovie

Why digital seniors?

In today’s digital society, elderly people represent a vulnerable group due to the lack of skills and information.

The share of people in the 65 – 74 age group with at least basic digital skills is only 11% in Slovakia, the EU average in the same age group is 24%.

  • They have very limited access to development of the digital skills
  • They do not have a digital device or an Internet connection
  • They are often unwitting consumers and spreaders of hoaxes and misinformation
  • Misinformation in the field of health can endanger the lives of seniors

"How to maintain the motivation of trained seniors to continuously use a digital device?"

The Ministry of Investments, Regional Development and Informatization of the Slovak Republic, with the project Improving digital skills of seniors and distribution of Senior tablets, educates elderly people in face-to-face training in the digital skills and provides successful graduates with digital devices.

Winners

First place
Valec

Based on behavioral sciences and elements of gamification, they created an app that motivates seniors to open it daily and even compare themselves with other users. The goal of the solution is to present approximately 100 topics from various categories, divided by difficulty, through an educational app. It offers seniors interactive tasks and, through a game, encourages knowledge repetition while also maintaining engagement through competition with other users, keeping seniors in a learning and progressing environment.

Martin Nemeček

“Hackathons are proof that even ordinary people can come up with great solutions to current problems. We believe our solution will bring seniors to the forefront of digitalization.”

Second place
T Old Stars

The solution called začnime.to is an application with two interfaces: one visible to the senior and another accessible to their family, equipped with admin functions. This allows the administrator to update the content for their senior relative based on their specific needs.

Lucia Maková

“Seniors in Slovakia often use button phones and are afraid to transition into the digital world with touchscreens. That’s why we are very pleased that our solution, začnime.to, caught the jury’s attention. We will be able to bring the online world even to the less tech-savvy seniors who want to start but are afraid to take the first step.”

Third place
Fireflies

Digitálny lišiak is a solution designed to increase the motivation of the older generation to use modern technologies, or “teaching seniors in a playful way” how to navigate the digital world. The core of the solution is a digital guide where seniors can practice their skills in a safe environment after completing the training.

Lukáš Oškera

“The hackathon had a relaxed atmosphere and turned out excellent. The topic brought a great mix of specificity and openness, giving teams plenty of room for creativity. This was ultimately reflected in the final outputs. The mentors were very helpful, and the icing on the cake was the participation of seniors, including Mrs. Jarka Staneková from the AkSen civic association, who came to consult on the solutions and provided feedback on the created prototypes based on their direct user experience. We look forward to seeing what topics hacknime.to will bring in the future.”
