Basic information

The second MIRRI SR hackathon, titled Seniors in the Digital World, financed through the Recovery and Resilience Plan of Slovakia aimed to find ways to motivate seniors to use digital devices, improve their e-literacy, and help them navigate the digital world.

The winning team, Valec, developed a prototype of an application that educates seniors and disadvantaged individuals in digital skills through interactive gameplay. ŤukApp offers around 100 topics across different categories, structured by difficulty levels. The app encourages seniors to log in daily, compare their progress with other users, and stay engaged through interactive tasks and competitive elements.

What changes will the application bring?

ŤukApp is a free, publicly available web application compatible with all devices and operating systems. It provides reliable information and tools to enhance digital skills, from learning basic tablet functions and internet browsing to online security tips and tricks.

In today’s digital society, seniors represent a vulnerable group due to a lack of digital skills and knowledge. In Slovakia, only 11% of people aged 65–74 have at least basic digital skills, compared to the EU average of 24%.

However, ŤukApp is not just about acquiring knowledge—it also builds seniors' confidence in using technology. "Hackathons prove that even everyday people can come up with great solutions to current challenges. We believe our solution will help bring seniors to the forefront of digitalization," emphasized Martin Nemeček, a member of the winning team from the Seniors in the Digital World hackathon.

The development, testing, and implementation of the application were carried out by Wisdom Factory s.r.o., in collaboration with Hemisféra Ľavá NGO for content creation.

The application includes 645 tasks of varying difficulty and 119 topics divided into five main thematic sections. The introductory lessons focus on basic digital technology use, followed by information search and evaluation, online communication principles, and digital security. Practical exercises are also an integral part of the learning process.
